Focus on photography

MENART FAIR’s journey is marked by photography. You will begin your visit by the structured, rigorous and architectural universe of Serge Najjar, which sounds like that of the great master of suprematism Kasimir Malevich.
It is followed by a series of photographs by Hassan Hajjaj, works of elaborate and sophisticated composition where everything is inspired by the popular Afro-Moroccan aesthetic.
Still on the same stand, Yoriyas in turn composes a paradoxical work where the pop graphics contrast with the characters locked in camisoles saturated with colors. Finally, Alia Ali, artist of Yemeni, Bosnian and American origins, questions the notion of identity, linguistics and borders, however her engaged work remains an aestheticism saturated with sun and colors.

Chervine’s photography exudes a sweet melancholy: streets, buildings and characters remain suspended in a sort of freeze frame. His work is in the same vein as that of David Hopper.
Farid Issa, founder of Atelier Relief, transforms photography into a wall sculpture. He collaborates for this edition with two Lebanese photographers Rami Mekdachi and Ali Kandil to compose his bas-reliefs.

Reem Al Faisal's black and white photographs capture a look, a gesture taken on the spot. It seems that his characters challenged by our gaze turn around to look at us in turn. Michel Platnic revisits the history of art. Through his self-portraits, he reinterprets the works of Schiele and Bacon.

No one needs to introduce Youssef Nabil, a photographer who has exhibited in major museums, art biennials and foundations. This artist creates dreamlike paintings enhanced with colors, like old films.
His work exudes a form of deep nostalgia.
Ahmed Mater, a Saudi artist whose work is exhibited in many museums, denounces the paradoxes of Saudi society and tends to reveal the political social problems that plague his country.

57B

Leila Alaoui (Morocco) « Les Marocains », 2010, Lambda print mounted on Dibond, 150 x 100cm, Courtesy of Galleria Continua

Leila Alaloui, poses her models head-on, in a harsh light on a black background that exalts the costumes and plants her models like archetypes.
Delel Tangour, is one of the first female photographers in the Maghreb.
She presents a black and white triptych composed like a Haiku. His work evokes absence, silence, evanescence.

All of these works here exhibited, express the richness, diversity and creative originality of artists from MENA countries (Middle East, North Africa).
